The Henry L. Stimson Center, a nonpartisan policy research center, seeks a highly-motivated individual to join the team as a full-time Research Assistant for the South Asia Program. The successful candidate will have some prior educational and/or professional experience in communications, research, or the South Asian security and/or nuclear fields.

Stimson's South Asia Program focuses on deterrence challenges, crisis dynamics, and great-power competition on the Subcontinent. The program seeks to reduce nuclear dangers in South Asia through novel research, analysis of the accelerating arms competition in Southern Asia, online platforms (e.g. South Asian Voices and Nuclear South Asia: A Guide to India, Pakistan, and the Bomb), and direct engagement with analysts and practitioners in the region.

The Research Assistant will contribute primarily to the day-to-day management of Nuclear South Asia and other Stimson open online courses (SOOCs). Co-producing a second SOOC on conventional and nuclear deterrence among China, India, Pakistan, and the United States will comprise a substantial portion of the incoming staff member's workload. The Research Assistant will also help advance programmatic objectives by providing administrative, editorial, and research support to the team.

DUTIES Essential Functions:

  • Build vibrant communities of "nuclear learners" on social media via organic-content promotion and ad campaigns.
  • Implement innovative student-engagement strategies for SOOCs consistent with best practices for online courses.
  • Generate new interactive graphics, video content/expert interviews, and other resources for SOOC students.
  • Compile recommended reading lists, lesson plans, and other instructor resources to facilitate the integration of Stimson online courses into university curricula.
  • Monitor and collect SOOC analytics, reporting key insights to Co-Directors, Research Associate, and funders and adapting strategies as necessary.
  • Coordinate timelines and deliverables with video editor, graphic designer, and other SOOC project consultants.
  • Provide editorial and research support to the South Asia Program'and contribute original analysis as appropriate.
  • Deliver administrative support to the South Asia Program, including, but not limited to: soliciting information from staff for funder reports, managing event logistics, serving as an event rapporteur, crafting communications for external audiences, and maintaining the course website.

QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience:

  • Prior educational and/or professional experience in South Asia and/or the nuclear field.
  • Substantive knowledge of South Asian security issues, especially deterrence challenges.
  • B.A. in Political Science, International Relations, or a related field.
  • Ability to work independently and to collaborate with peers in a team environment.
  • Familiarity with social-media platforms and effective promotion strategies as well as web-based graphic-design applications. Video-editing background a plus.
  • Demonstrated analytical, research, and writing skills.
  • Diplomatic skills and cultural sensitivity.
  • A record of academic excellence.
  • Relevant, but not required, language skills include Hindi, Urdu, and Mandarin.

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • Program interns and project consultants.
