Job Title: Senior Fellow and Director

FLSA Status: Exempt

Reports to: Vice President, Research Programs

Position Summary: The Henry L. Stimson Center, a nonpartisan policy research center, seeks a highly motivated individual to lead our Blockchain in Practice program as a full-time Senior Fellow and Director: The position is responsible for conceptualizing, managing, fundraising, and substantively completing multi-dimensional projects that apply new and emerging technologies for good. Stimson is at the forefront of examining and socializing blockchain technology among stakeholders and testing it in real-life scenarios, including incubating and developing proof of concepts. To date, existing efforts have focused on distributed ledger technology (DLT) for the global trade in chemicals and nuclear materials. Stimson seeks a program director that can help develop innovative applications that promote international peace and security. A strong candidate will be a self-starter who can manage existing programs while developing new applications of DLT to meet international security and development challenges.

Essential Functions

  • Conceptualize, fundraise for, and implement research/advocacy efforts that lead to the practical application of DLT technology to meet global security and development challenges;
  • Set priorities for existing DLT proof of concepts related to nuclear safeguards and chemical trade projects, communicate these priorities effectively, and manage them efficiently;
  • Interface with and manage external technical teams and other partners;
  • Advance knowledge on advances in DLT and use cases related to global security;
  • Prepare substantive content for funding proposals and participate with management in identification, development, and cultivation of funding sources;
  • Build relationships and networks with influential individuals and institutions in the field of nuclear security, safeguards, chemical weapons nonproliferation and blockchain technology, while initiating outreach to other prospective sectors that might benefit from DLT solutions;
  • Conceptualize, research, and publish analysis and finding through op-eds, reports, books, policy briefs, press releases, etc.;
  • Relay timely and useful information to press contacts upon request;
  • Support other project work through evaluation of proposal ideas, writings, and finding areas of intersection of work;
  • Develop and implement mechanisms to evaluate project progress and ensure timely and high-quality work product;
  • Monitor project spending and funding; and
  • Provide day-to-day management of project staff.

Required Education, Skills, Experience

  • 10 years relevant experience with Master's degree in related field (engineering, international relations/political science, data management, etc)Experience with substantive issue areas of the program and proven track record with skills to lead the program; superior writing, analysis, and communications skills;
  • A pragmatic mindset, cooperative attitude, and a visionary, innovative spirit;
  • Desire to work in a highly collaborative environment with a focus on producing work of excellence and influence;
  • Fundraising skills and track record of success;
  • Excellent management and staff development skills;
  • Proven ability to manage departmental budget; and
  • Willingness to travel, when appropriate.
