Team & Organization Culture

  • The Communications team is small, close-knit, and fast-paced. We expect our colleagues to move quickly, solve problems, pay attention to details, support each other, and keep many balls in the air at once.
  • We wear many different hats, and they are all important. Communications is simultaneously an advisor, enabler, service provider, and collaborator with colleagues across a wide range of subject matter expertise and communications experience.
  • Management is mentorship-driven. We aim to create an environment that enables professional development, intentional skill building, and finding opportunities for growth.
  • Stimson uses a hybrid workplace schedule. Communications staff have the flexibility to split the work week between in-office and remote/work from home.
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion are among the Stimson Center's core values. They inform both the work that we do and how we do it. More on our DE&I efforts.

  • Coordinate the publishing process. Move publications through the publishing process, from initial concept through review and production. Work with policy programs to understand their needs, communicate expectations, and meet internal and external deadlines. Ensure compliance with relevant quality assurance and ethics and integrity policies. Coordinate graphic design and printing vendors. Copy edit shorter publications. Post completed publications to the web.
  • Promotion and distribution. Work with department colleagues to distribute research products via mass email and promote them on social media in collaboration with policy programs. Create, review, proof, and send mass emails. Draft and schedule social media content.
  • Process improvement and archiving. Identify and implement opportunities to improve and streamline the publishing process. Develop and implement a system for long-term publication archiving.
  • Other communications activities as needed. Department staff routinely assist each other and other departments and programs with a variety of day-to-day functions, such as supporting public events or updating website content.

Qualifications & Qualities

  • A bachelor's degree in a relevant field and/or 1-3 years of relevant work experience or internships.
  • An editor's careful attention to detail. Strong writing skills. Experience in publishing and editing is a plus.
  • Tact, sound judgment, maturity, and discretion.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and collaboratively, take feedback gracefully, and iterate and improve on work.
