Defense Strategy and Planning Research Internship

The Stimson Center's Defense Strategy and Planning Program seeks a highly motivated upper-level undergraduate or graduate student to assist with the research for a project on the use of force in Chinese foreign policy. The intern will contribute primarily to analysis of open-source data on the use or deployment of military force to achieve discrete political and strategic objectives. The intern will also assist with substantial research, literature reviews, writing, and editing for a forthcoming book project. The intern will also have the opportunity to pursue a research agenda, culminating in a presentation and, depending on the individual's analytic aptitude and motivation, the publication of an op-ed. The internship is well suited for candidates interested in gaining practical experience and knowledge on Indo-Pacific security affairs and the use of coercion in Chinese foreign policy.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct case research and data entry in support of project objectives;
  • Summarize findings from relevant literature in both English and Chinese;
  • Assist project staff with proofreading, editing, research, and related tasks;
  • Assist project staff with media outreach, including mailings and information requests.

Qualifications:

  • Strong interest in Chinese foreign policy and strategic issues, particularly deterrence and coercive diplomacy;
  • Advanced proficiency in Mandarin Chinese;
  • Familiarity with quantitative and qualitative social science research methods;
  • Demonstrated analytical, research, and writing skills;
  • The ability to work efficiently and independently while showing initiative;
  • A record of academic excellence.

Please submit your resume, cover letter, and a writing sample (no more than 5 pages) as a single PDF.

Applicants must be able to commit to a minimum of 20 hours per week. Preference may be given to those available 30+ hours per week for a minimum of 15 weeks. This is an unpaid internship.
