Summer 2021 Nuclear Safeguards Internship

The Nuclear Safeguards Program (NSP) offers a unique opportunity to gain experience in the field of nuclear non-proliferation, nuclear materials security and control. The NSP examines the resiliency of the verification system that underpins the nuclear non-proliferation regime. Specifically, the program focuses on how evolving international safeguards obligations impact states and industry across the fuel cycle, whether the front-end (mining, milling conversion) or the back-end (waste storage and disposal). Efforts are currently aimed at understanding how future nuclear facilities, such as emerging reactors (e.g. SMRs and advanced reactors), deep geological repositories and multinational fuel cycle facilities, coupled with emerging technologies, challenge and/or enhance the management of safeguards.

The NSP is part of Stimson's Promoting Security & Prosperity (PSP) Initiative which cultivates research, analysis, and on-the-ground activities to identify pragmatic policy solutions to some of today's most pressing threats to international security and economic vitality. Comprised of seven distinct yet collaborative programs, the PSP convenes stakeholders and works to chronicle and develop innovative responses to an array of transnational challenges at the national, regional, international levels. The virtual internship will focus on non-proliferation efforts that are cross-cutting with other programs at Stimson.

Internship opportunities include an independent project, presentation, feature article on the website, and the contribution of analysis-driven content to program projects. Although virtual, the Nuclear Safeguards team prioritizes providing networking opportunities and professional development experiences to the intern, including participating in program meetings with international security experts and setting up one-to-one informational interviews. Stimson interns are encouraged to attend both internal and external events, such as nuclear-related events, non-proliferation forums, and resume-building workshops.

Responsibilities for an intern include:

  • Research, writing, analysis, and editing for NSP publications
  • Coordination of NSP events
  • Representing Stimson at meetings and related events
  • Administrative support

The desired candidate should have a strong interest in multidisciplinary and innovative solutions to nuclear proliferation challenges and have strong research, writing, and editing skills, including experience in archival research. The candidate will have an eye for attention to detail, a commitment to high-quality work and be flexible to work independently and as part of a team. While not required, other qualities considered an asset would include additional language skills and full-time availability. Graduate students are encouraged to apply. Experience in nuclear issues is preferred, but not essential.

Applicants must submit a resume, cover letter, and writing sample (less than 5 pages) as a single PDF to be considered. Please include at least one reference with your application. Note, the internship is unpaid and requires a commitment of at least 20 hours per week. A small internship stipend is available to virtual interns. After the internship deadline closes, applicants will receive notice if they have been chosen to proceed to the interview round. After the interview, applicants will be notified whether they have or have not been selected for the internship. Apply today: https://www.stimson.org/careers/employment/.
