Defense Strategy and Planning Research Internship

The Stimson Center seeks a highly motivated graduate student to assist with the research for a project on uses of the armed forces in Chinese foreign policy. The intern will contribute primarily to the collection and analysis of open-source data on the use or deployment of military force to achieve discrete political and strategic objectives. The intern will also assist with research, literature reviews, writing, and editing. The intern will also have the opportunity to pursue a research agenda, culminating in a presentation and, depending on the individual's analytic aptitude and motivation, the publication of an op-ed.



  • Conduct case research and data entry in support of project objectives;
  • Summarize findings from relevant literature;
  • Assist with media outreach, including mailings and information requests;
  • Assist project staff with proofreading, editing, research, and related tasks.
  • Provide administrative support, including setting up at events and taking good notes.



  • Strong interest in Chinese foreign policy and strategic issues, particularly deterrence and coercive diplomacy.
  • Strong command of English and Chinese languages;
  • Strong interest in China;
  • Familiarity with quantitative and qualitative social science research methods.
  • Demonstrated analytical, research, and writing skills.
  • The ability to work efficiently and independently while showing initiative.
  • A record of academic excellence

Applicants must be able to commit to a minimum of 20 hours per week. Preference may be given to those available 30+ hours per week for a minimum of 15 weeks. This is an unpaid internship.
