The Henry L. Stimson Center seeks a finance professional to join the growing organization.  The Finance Manager will report to the Director of Finance & Administration and will work closely with the Associate Director of Finance.  The Finance Manager is responsible for maintaining and controlling general ledger accounts; recording financial transactions; providing a thorough review of financial records and ensuring the accuracy of allocations, and assisting with budget preparations, invoicing, reporting and funder compliance. The ideal candidate is energetic, proactive, innovative, detail oriented, organized, and juggles multiple priorities with ease and efficiency. 


General Finance

  • Perform daily accounting activities, ensuring the timeliness of income receipts and expense payments;
  • Review timesheets and process payroll;
  • Review financial reports and transactions to ensure the integrity of information;
  • Assist with monthly closing of the general ledger, including analysis of assigned revenue and expense accounts and preparation of adjustments as needed;
  • Coordinate the annual audit preparation, completion of schedules for the Form 990, and related activities; and
  • Review, revise, and implement necessary accounting processes to ensure streamlining of information, the sufficiency of documentation, and accuracy of information.

Grants and Contracts Accounting

  • Ensure compliance with sponsoring agency regulations;
  • Proactively, interact with program staff and outside entities, performs general accounting related functions for grants/contracts ensuring compliance with grantor and laws;
  • Reconcile various costs to prepare monthly and quarterly invoices, to include review and analysis of unbilled amount on a monthly basis;
  • Prepare budgets and required financial documentation for grant and contract applications;
  • Prepare internal and external financial reports of considerable complexity requiring independent judgment, initiative, and knowledge of the organization, accounting, and policies and procedures of the various federal, state and local government agencies; and
  • Assist in providing quality assurance for the grants and contracts functions of the finance team.


  • A Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Business is required.  CPA is preferred;
  • Three years of relevant accounting experience, preferably in the nonprofit sector;
  • Knowledge of GAAP, particularly as it applies to accounting requirements of nonprofit organizations;
  • Meticulous organizational skills, attention to detail, and love for processes and systems;
  • Customer service focus with strong interpersonal skills;
  • A willingness to work in a fast-paced environment and an ability to respond to requests promptly;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills;
  • Demonstrated willingness to solicit and impart feedback to improve processes;
  • An innovative spirit, a way with people, a calm-under-pressure and flexible approach when things move quickly;
  • Confidentiality and discretion, professionalism, and commitment to excellence;
  • Experience with payroll processing and Federal grant invoicing and compliance is preferred; and
  • Intermediate Excel skills and familiarity with QuickBooks or similar accounting system preferred.
